Creel & Cosmos
Step inside Creel & Cosmos, where maritime heritage meets celestial wonder.
Inspired by traditional withy weaving and lobster creel techniques, the structure is draped with handmade and reclaimed fishing nets, including salvaged ghost nets, connecting craft, community, and care for the seas. The framework, painted in phosphorescent hues, glows with starlit points, guiding you toward a woven textile cosmos within.
Inside, light-based textile technologies create a magical nebula, inviting viewers to peer in, lose themselves, and immerse in a universe where heritage, craft, and community shine together.
A celebration of the sea, the stars, and the art of weaving worlds.

About the artists and work
This is part of the 12°N Project, which embeds local artists within Hartlepool communities to co-create inclusive, imaginative activities shaped by residents ’ interests and lived experiences. This year, the project celebrates the theme of Constellations — a reflection of creativity, community and unity. Just as stars form patterns in the night sky, Wintertide Festival seeks to illuminate the power of connection: between people, places and stories.
