'Spiral Galaxy' by Periplum
Imagine a star falling on the shore, and another star falling, a thousand stars all drifting down to shine on the night waves landing.
Take a journey to the heart of a spiral galaxy and make a wish upon the stars. Outdoor arts company Periplum create a constellation with fire, offering a peaceful and meditative act of reflection, lit collectively by members of local communities, and joined by artists from Periplum’s Creating Outdoors Professional Development Programme.
The project is funded by Arts Council England as part of North Sea Sirens. Re-commissioned by Wintertide Festival from The Spiral Shore by Periplum, originally commissioned by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, 2024.

About the artists and work
Periplum creates ground-breaking site-responsive & outdoor theatre events, crafting extraordinary audience experiences through narrative-driven performance.
Spiral Galaxy is a breathtaking fire installation of 1,000 glowing fire cans, forming shimmering pathways that twist and turn through the Elephant Rock event space.
Step into a universe of light and flame and experience this calm and meditative installation in different ways. From the elevated viewing area, you can watch the spectacle unfold as the public journey into the heart of the spiral. Small groups will be invited to navigate through the spiral galaxy to make a wish, sending your hopes into the night sky amid the flicker and glow of the Spiral Galaxy.
After making the journey, you can also listen to a specially composed soundscape through wireless headphones, transforming the view into a spellbinding sensory experience.
Accessibility and suitability
Audiences move through 3m wide pathways and remain on the concreted area throughout the journey, making it accessible for people with mobility issues.
Audience guidance: walking / promenading experience, we advise the public to wear suitable walking boots and all-weather gear.
The event is available to all ages, however, headphones will not be provided to under 6 years old.
Children must be accompanied by an adult and monitored at all times for their own safety.
